What is Squint Treatment?
The goal of treatment is to realign the eyes, improve vision, and restore binocular vision (the ability of both eyes to work together). The treatment approach depends on the type and severity of the squint, as well as the patient’s age.
Common Treatment Options:
-
-
Glasses or Contact Lenses:
- If refractive errors (e.g., myopia, hyperopia) are contributing to the squint, glasses or contact lenses can correct vision and, in some cases, help realign the eyes.
-
Patching (Occlusion Therapy):
- A patch is worn over the stronger eye to force the weaker eye to work harder, preventing amblyopia (lazy eye) and improving eye coordination. This is commonly used in children.
-
Prism Lenses:
- These are specialized lenses that help bend light, reducing double vision by helping the eyes work together.
-
Eye Exercises (Orthoptics):
- In some cases, exercises may be prescribed to strengthen the eye muscles and improve eye coordination, especially in intermittent squints.
-
Botulinum Toxin (Botox) Injections:
- Botox injections can temporarily weaken an overactive eye muscle, allowing the eyes to realign. This is used in certain cases, often as a temporary measure.
-
Strabismus Surgery:
- Surgery may be recommended to correct the alignment of the eye muscles. The surgeon tightens or loosens certain muscles to move the eye into the correct position.
- Surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis and can be done on both children and adults. Multiple surgeries may be needed in some cases.
-
Vision Therapy:
- This is a structured program of visual activities to improve the coordination and efficiency of the eyes, often recommended by a Squint Treatment Specialist in Pune for patients with specific types of squint.
